Kittsee

Kittsee is at the far eastern point of Austria, next to the Slovak capital Bratislava. Schloss (Palace) Kittsee is just outside the center of town. Surounded by a green park, the Barock Palace is one of the most important historical monuments of North Burgenland.

It was built at the start of the 1700’s as a manor house, before Johann Listy expanded it into a palace. In the middle of the 1800’s, Prince Anton Esterházy in Barock style. At the end of the 1900’s, famous “doctor of the poor” Prince Ladislav Batthyány-Strattmann moved into the palace with his family. While living in Kittsee, Batthyány-Strattmann founded the Kittsee Hospital and treated patients for free. In 1969, the town of Kittsee acquired the Schloss Kittsee for municipal use.

For over thirty years, Schloss Kittsee has been the site of regular concerts from Pannonisches Forum, which have made Kittsee one of the cultural hotspots of Burgenland. From 1973 until 2008, Schloss Kittsee hosted the Ethnographic Museum, an extended collection from the Museum für Volkskunde in Vienna.
